Words Their Way: Word Sorting
Our Words Their Way program focuses on students internalizing spelling patterns, rather than memorizing the spelling of particular words. Each week, your child has a word sort that supports the spelling pattern he/she is learning at school. Here are some ways you can work with the sort at home:SORT
Cut the sort and lay down the headings. Sort the words by saying each word aloud and deciding which category the word fits with.
NO PEEKING
Lay down the headings for each category and have an adult read the picture/word. After listening carefully, the child should point to where the word should go. This sort should be done only by sound, not by sight!
WORD HUNT
Your child should search the home for words that match this week’s sort. Look in books, newspapers, etc. and record findings on a sheet of paper.
WRITING SORT
Your child should make a chart with the categories for the week’s sort. An adult should read off the list of words and the child should write the word in the correct category. *We are looking for students to correctly identify the feature/category of the word – complete correct spelling is not required at this time!*
