Introducing our Dolch Words!

Today, we started our Dolch Words system!  Your child got his/her first set of five words to practice over the next week both at home and at school.  The goal for these words is quick recognition and accuracy in reading automatically.
An introductory note explaining the system and a list of ways to practice the words at home was sent home today.  You will also see this in the back of your child's folder:
(sorry for the odd view)
The post-it contains your child's 5 words for the week to practice.  The page behind is the assessment recording sheet.  Both of these items are to STAY in the back of your child's folder each week.  Please do not take either out; instead just reference the post-it for the 5 words.

Start practicing the words this weekend! :)  Your First Grader will be re-tested on these words next Thursday, October 9th.  A new set of words will be created based on that assessment for the following week and the cycle will continue each week.

Speaking of Thursdays, I will be creating an online sign-up sheet calling for volunteers every Thursday morning to help assess students on the words.  We will begin at the start of the school day, and it will require 2 volunteers each week.  I already have one volunteer for this upcoming Thursday. Oct. 9; but I am in need of one more.  If you are available and willing, please send me an email.  I will get the remainder of the sign-up sheet going as soon as possible.

First Grade Homework Log

Happy Monday First Grade Families!  Can you believe it's already week 3 of school?!

Today your child took home his/her first homework log.  You will notice there is some math practice sheets attached that go along with what we have and will be learning this week.  I do not mind if you have to move around the math homework to fit your schedule.  With this in mind, please do NOT have your child go AHEAD of the math homework.  For example, we have learned about number lines, but we have not learned about the number grid yet.  I would prefer that they wait to do the work until we have learned about it in class.  Please remember that your child should be reading 20 minutes each night.  This may also include you reading to them; however try to balance both.

In October, we will add to the homework with Compass Learning and Dolch Word practice.  When Compass Learning becomes math homework, you may see less math paper practice attached.

The homework log packet is due back to school each Monday.  If there is a game attached, you can tear that off to keep at home to play often.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!
